I rarely use gems for masculine cards (though matte dots work well instead) but I think this is one place where you can do so without making the card too “fancy” for a guy. Other elements that make this work are the choice of a bold geometric (rather than eg. floral) pattern and the choice of colours.
Colour Combo
This colour combo mixes Basic Black, Boho Blue and Basic White.
Pattern gems birthday card
Start with an A6 portrait card of Basic Black. Adhere a (5-1/2″ x 3-7/8″) card front layer of Boho Blue card. Cut a (5-1/4″ x 3-5/18″) panel of Delightfully Eclectic DSP and then trim inwards to get a balanced pattern (ie. similar white space showing on each side and top and bottom). Adhere the layer direct and central on the card front. Using All That dies, die cut a shaped and embossed label from Boho Blue card and an embossed oval label from basic White card. Stamp the birthday sentiment from the Circle Sayings set on the white label using Memento Black ink. Adhere this stamped label direct to the Boho Blue label and then pop up on the card front with dimensionals.
Now add Adhesive-backed Solid Gems in a repeating pattern to the patterned DSP. This pattern takes a lot of gems and so I used two different sizes and alternated them (see video).
Here’s a short video with tips for choosing and using gems and DSP to create repeating patterns. Please subscribe to my Youtube channel to see my quick cards and quick tips each week.
Pattern gems birthday card insert
On the Basic White insert, using Memento Black ink, stamp the circular “Celebrate” sentiment from the Circle Sayings stamp set. Add borders of Delightfully Eclectic DSP and Boho Blue card down the right side.
